WORKSHOP ON KEY STAKEHOLDERS’ NEEDS FOR

IMPROVEMENT OF THE MASTER AND DOCTORAL

PROGRAMMES IN FINANCE AND BANKING

(UNDER DECREE NO.17/2021/TT-BGDĐT)

 

In an attempt to improve post graduate teaching quality and to meet key stakeholders’ needs in the trend of globalization and and digital transformation, the Department of Finance and Banking, School of Economics, Can Tho University organized a workshop on Key stakeholders’ needs for improvement of the research-oriented and application-oriented Master programs and the Doctoral program in Finance and Banking.

This workshop was held at 1:30 pm on the 6th January, 2022 at School of Economics. Participants included members of the program improvement committees, program coordinators and heads of deparments as well as lecturers of School of Economics. Especially, the workshop welcomed experts and representatives from commercial banks, enterprises, and universities as well as alumni and graduates of finance and banking major to join on the virtual platform.

The Department of Finance and Banking has been recognized as a highly qualified tertiary institution which offers a well trained workforce in the field of finance and banking for the labor market, business community, and society for years. Numerous representatives’ discussions focused on how to clearly define the objectives of the master programs. Meanwhile, various suggestions emphasized on the level of transferability of knowledge between the master level and the doctoral level in these programs.

The workshop helped to clarify the objective of the research-oriented master program by coursework is to provide systematic knowledge and analytical skills to solve practical problems in the field of finance and banking. Meanwhile, the objective of the application-oriented master program requires research skills to conduct independent research in the field of finance and banking besides those defined knowledge and skills of the other program. For the doctoral program, the main objective aims to provide advanced knowledge of the financial system, various forms of financial assets, advanced theories on asset pricing, and advanced qualitative and quantitative techniques for strategic plans as well as policies in the finance and banking. 

The workshop also provided an opportunity for alumni and graduates to share their own studying experiences at Can Tho University as well as to explain how they apply knowledge to their own careers. Meanwhile, many experts from the industry also shared their own experience in recruitment criteria for potential applicants and graduates in finance and banking, and suggested new skill set to be defined and added to the programs. These suggestions were necessary inputs that significantly helped to improve these programs in the near future.

From the workshop, the program committees appreciated every representatives’ discussion and idea, and shall redefine the programs’ learning outcomes that ideally meet the stakeholders’ expectations. At the same time, the committees evaluated the strengths and limitations the current programs. These stakeholders’ evaluations shall be taken as inputs for the Department of Finance and Banking to further improve the master and doctoral programs in Finance and Banking.
